Shin Splints
Shin splints refers to pain at the front of the lower legs along the inside edge. This condition is also known as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS), Anteriortibial pain, Tibialperositis, Posterior tibial shin splint and exercise-induced leg pain. Pain is caused by a change in activity levels or just after it, like when running more often or increasing the distance. This is a common complaint with both trained and recreational athletes. Excessive training and activity without adequate time for the tissues to recover or heal is generally the underlying cause of shin splints. This results in inflammation or swelling of the tendons, muscles and the layer of tissue covering the shin bone.
The best form of healing is rest from the activity in question for a period of at least 2 weeks or till the pain subsides completely. Ice and cold packs over the affected area twice a day for 20 minutes also helps, along with over-the-counter medication.
While this is rarely a serious condition, it might be necessary to visit a podiatrist if the pain is chronic and does not improve with home treatment. One cause often mistaken for shin splint is a stress fracture.
