Foot Problems in Children – In-toe and out-toe walking
In-toeing is a fairly common problem with children which most outgrow naturally by the time they reach the age of 2. In-toeing is said to happen when a foot or feet point inward when walking instead of straight ahead. This makes a child more susceptible to tripping than other children. If in-toeing persists and causes problems, a podiatrist might recommend treatment with stretching exercises, special shoes, or some other forms of treatment.
By the age of 2 most children walk with their feet slightly angled outward which is natural. But in some children the angle is excessive, which is known as out-toeing. Out-toeing is not so common and most often corrects itself with time. However it might be advisable to consult a podiatrist who would recommend a line of treatment.
It is vital that children’s feet are carefully looked after since most adult foot conditions begin to develop at this stage. These conditions are brought about most often by ill-fitting or unsuitable footwear which begin to exert an unnatural pressure on certain parts of the feet. Very often this contributes to an unnatural gait which becomes habit-forming. Foot and Ankle Associates, a Bay Area podiatric clinic is accustomed to tending to children’s feet as part of its comprehensive range of podiatric services.
