Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection which causes flaking, scaling and itching of the affected areas. This condition with the medical name of Tinea Pedis, is also known as ringworm of the foot. While it usually affects the feet, it can spread to other areas including the groin. Athlete’s foot which is highly contagious is transmitted in damp environments such as showers, locker rooms and bath houses where people walk barefoot. Other risk factors are sharing footwear and towels of an infected person.

Diagnosis is generally through visual inspection. Typical symptoms are itchy feet especially between the toes where the skin may become cracked or soggy and white. The skin on the soles of the feet often becomes dry and flaky. Athlete’s foot is usually treated with over the counter and prescription topical medications coupled with good hygienic practice. The patient’s feet and footwear should be kept dry to prevent further growth of the fungus. Topical anti-fungal medications are available as sprays, powders, creams or gels.
